About this area:
Muskingum County, named after the Native
American word meaning "by the river side," is located in the east-central
portion of the state. The Licking and Muskingum Rivers flow through
Muskingum County. New Concord is the hometown of Colonel John H. Glenn, U.S.
Senator, 1974-1997. In 1962, he was the first American astronaut to orbit
the earth; and in 1998, the oldest person to travel in space. Major
employers include AK Steel Holding, Auto Zone Inc, Wendy's Intl/New Bakery
Co, 5 B's Inc., Genesis Health Care System, Lear Corporation, Longaberger
Company, Muskingum College, Muskingum County Government, Owens
Illinois/Owens-Brockway, Dollar General, and the Zanesville City Board of
Education. The average unemployment rate in 2007 was 7.8%, above the State
rate of 5.6%.
